I would like to narrate one more thrilling
experience I had some 15 years ago.
I was in SHEGAON a pilgrimage place in
Vidarbha. I was there to demonstrate our COUNTERMATE for some donations
collection application.
Just one day later I was free to leave the
place. When I came to book my return ticket by bus, I remembered of my
schoolmate who was staying in a place called
SINDKHEDRAJA some 10 KMs from ADGAONRAJA which was around 150 kms from
SHEGAON.
Calculating 3-4 hours by bus journey I
booked for the bus which was expected at 4
O'Clock in the evening at SHEGAON.
Carrying back the demo unit and my personal
baggage I came to the pick up point and eagerly waited for the bus to come.
I was looking forward to meet my friend
after a gap of 35-40 years.
But the bus arrived only at 8-30 P.M. I
still decided to stick to my plan considering my reaching time would be around
12 at midnight. I thought I
would take a lodge for night shelter and move on to my friend's place next day
in the morning.
I got on to the bus and told the
driver-conductor that I was going for the first time to this place and they
should take care that I get off at right
place. They agreed to my request.
Feeling assured I went off to sleep. At
around 12-30 I was woken up by the conductor saying I had reached the place
where I was supposed to get off. I thanked him and got off the bus after taking
my baggage down. The demo unit was quite heavy.
Immediately the bus left.
I found myself alone on the totally dark
highway. It was drizzling. I wondered which place that was. I saw some light
around half a kilometer away. I moved in that direction occasionally cursing
myself for deciding to visit my friend. The heavy demo unit was really a
problem to carry it along.
Reaching the source of light, I found that
there was one couple of IRON SMITHs working on iron rods. I was happy that
there was life and some hope of getting shelter.
"Can I get a lodge here nearby?" I asked.
" No. There is no lodge here
anywhere." Replied the blacksmith.
I was stunned. I said, “ My God. How come
there is no lodge here. This is ADGAONRAJA a Taluka place.”
“ No Saheb. This is ADGAON MAHI. ADGAONRAJA
is 15 KMs from here.”
“Oh God. What I can do now? I wanted to be
in ADGAONRAJA.”
I thought this would create some sympathy
for me and I will get some help from them. At least he would offer me a shelter
till the drizzle stops.
That was not to happen. He pointed his
finger in other direction. “That light you can see, is DAK BUNGALOW. You may
get some shelter there.” I calculated the distance. It must be around a
kilometer. I thanked him and picked up my baggage and started off for the DAK
BUNGALOW. I remembered stories of GHOST BLACKSMITHS and looked at their feet
whether they were in opposite direction. Luckily they were in right direction.
It took some 25 minutes for me to reach the
light source. Yes. That was the DAK BUNGALOW. There was one watchman’s cabin at
the gate. The bungalow was big and had verandah. Huge trees were surrounding
the bunglow. There were two closed doors.
The curtains on the door were drawn and
were swaying with breeze.
I called out for watchman. There was no
response. I waited for nearly five minutes near the cabin. But there was no
human movement. Only the branches of the trees and the curtains were moving
with the breeze. I dared to go near the veranda where a bulb of 40 watts was
glowing. I again shouted out. “Is anybody there? “
No response.
Then I decided to get on to verandah to get
some shelter away from the drizzle. I put my belongings on the verandah. I took
out the bed sheet from the bag and laid it on the floor. I also took out the
pack of cards and started playing SOLO game. Though I was feeling sleepy, I
could not do so because of two reasons. One was the uncertainty of human
presence and second was the costly demo-kit I had.
The continuous drizzle and the swaying of
trees & also the curtains on the door, was adding chill to the atmosphere.
Occasional barking of the dogs in far off darkness was making me more alert.
I was playing cards and occasionally
looking at the closed doors whether anybody was opening them. Nothing happened.
My race with the time was severely against
me.
Some times the cool breeze was making me
shiver.
It was half past one now. Card game was my
good company.
At three I again had another look at the
watchman cabin and also at the closed doors of verandah. No signs of human
existence.
When the watch showed 5 in the morning I
folded the bed sheet and packed my things to carry with me. I came out of
bungalow. Still the drizzle had not stopped. I came on the road. Felt a little
human movement. Traced back the same road which I took to come to the DAK
BUNGALOW. I saw one chaiwala lighting the stove. Felt relieved. Waited there
for him to make the tea. After sipping the hot tea I asked him for conveyance
to ADGAONRAJA. I got a shared SIX SEATER. In 15 minutes time I was in
ADGAONRAJA. I waited for the bus to SINDKHEDRAJA. In an hours time I was with
my good old friend.
I was so delighted to see my friend after
so many years that I forgot the chilly experience I went through. But when I
got on to the train back to Mumbai, I recollected every minute I spent at
ADGAONMAHI. I wondered how I got the courage to face the spine chilling
atmosphere.
